When we moved into our current house, I prepared the best way I could. I thought I knew everything about the area and was ready to make it our home. Suddenly, Noah was running around the playroom, tripped on his own feet and landed head first on the desk.
I panicked a little, as I didn’t know where the closest urgent care was.
After a frantic search online, I ended up at Nationwide Children’s hospital. Not an urgent care. I didn’t realize this until we got there and it was too late. Luckily, it was a quick visit but I had to pay an emergency room co-pay and had a longer wait than I should have.
If I had calmed myself a little, I would have found out that our local urgent care is only about 12 mins away in Canal Winchester. We’ve been there 2 or 3 times since then (as my 2 older children are boys) and it has worked for us.
Do you know if you should be going to an Urgent Care or the Emergency room?
Unsure of where to take your child when they need care? Take this quiz by Nationwide Children’s Hospital to help you learn the difference.
It is great to know the difference in going to an emergency room and urgent care, especially with children. While every injury or sickness is worrisome, one place may be more equipped to deal with it. Trying to decide whether or not to go to an Urgent Care is as easy as figuring out what is wrong. Check out the list below:
- Allergic reactions
- Asthma/difficulty breathing
- Small broken bones
- Minor/small burns
- Minor/small cuts
- Fever
- Rashes
- Sore throat
- Vomiting and diarrhea
Nationwide Children’s Hospital Emergency room (and the Lewis Center Emergency Department) is equipped to handle these symptoms:
- Allergic reactions (anaphylactic shock)
- Asthma/difficulty breathing/respiratory distress
- Broken bones
- Burns
- Dehydration
- Fever (especially in infants eight weeks of age or younger)
- Seizure
- Severe pain
Why is it important to go to a Nationwide Children’s location? Regular urgent care locations are designed for adults while a Nationwide Children’s location specializes in children. Wouldn’t you want someone who job it is to not only to know how to treat a child but who knows how to interact with a child? They have pulled through countless times calming my child when I thought it couldn’t be done.
