5 Tips for Keeping Your Business Running Through Winter

December 2, 2021 by Ashley T

Your business is your livelihood, and without it, you cannot support yourself or your family. It is therefore vital that it keeps running all year. Yet, it seems like the weather gets worse every holiday season, and keeping your business running through winter is always challenging. However, like anything, you can stave off the worst with some planning and minor changes.

Use Adequate Transportation

Driving in the colder seasons can become treacherous. A bright and clear day can quickly change into a white nightmare. And with snow and dipping temperatures, you are at the mercy of icy roads. There are 120,000 incidents per year because of ice on the roads. In such cases, your standard car may not be enough, and it might be more beneficial to hire a rugged off-road vehicle from a supplier like Flex Fleet Rental. If you cannot do this, you can install winter tires on your car. Winter tires aren’t a complete solution, but they will provide better traction in the snow and prevent an incident if you hit some ice.

Plan Around the Weather

The adverse weather of the season is predicted by meteorologists. And although you can be caught in snowstorms, icy hailstones, or crosswinds, you can largely plan for such events. It is beneficial if you keep an eye on the weather channels. And if there is even a hint of treacherous weather, do not attempt to drive to your site as the seemingly favorable weather can change without warning. You can, of course, plan your opening or work hours around the advice of meteorologists. There may be a whiteout in the morning, but the day may be clear from noon.

Keep an Eye on Covid News

As with the weather, the world is currently at the mercy of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although many countries can operate without lockdown measures, we aren’t out of the woods yet. And with the new Omicron variant currently spreading, the outlook for this winter is bleak. Therefore, you should keep a close watch on the current news around Covid as it could significantly affect your business. If you think your business will be affected by the new variant, plan ahead now. And put a system in place for covering any losses should a lockdown be reinstated.

Check Your Tech

It’s almost impossible to run a modern business without technology. Payment methods, booking systems, stock control, and project planning are reliant on multiple devices. Devices such as EPOS, smartphones, tablets, network systems, and PCs are standard in modern companies. Yet, should something happen during winter, an engineer may not make it out to you in adverse weather. So, make backups of critical data, consider cloud computing and update all software as regularly as possible. In addition, consider UPS systems in case of power loss.

Keep Everyone Informed

No matter your perspective, customers, employees, and suppliers are the lifeblood of your business. Issues like Covid-19 and Brexit contribute significantly to the current global supply chain issues like the semiconductor shortages. Yet, no matter how distanced you are from these problems, you can always face disruption. Winter is a leading cause of disruption each year. You can help yourself by keeping everyone informed of the situation. Employees need to know when they can and cannot work. Also, customers should be given advance notice of delays to service.
