8 Ways To Promote How Your Child Makes Decisions

February 9, 2021 by Ashley T Leave a Comment

Before your child becomes of age, where they can make significant life decisions, it would be best to promote how they make daily decisions. Doing so can help them make better choices not only now but also in the long run.

A child’s life is full of decisions, from the small decisions such as what to wear to school or brunch with friends, to life-changing decisions such as what course they should study at a college.

As trivial and silly as some may look, children often end up making the wrong decisions. Wrong decisions may make your child feel sad or regretful. Fortunately, there are various ways you can help your child make better decisions.

If you can help your child make better choices, it can make their life easy and even improve their mental health as they will worry less.

Keep reading to find out how you can promote how your child makes decisions.

Teach Your Child How To Weigh Options and Consequences

To make the right decision, your child can start by knowing how to weigh the various alternatives available to a solution. They should list down all options available no matter how silly they sound or seem irrelevant.

Listing down all possible solutions to a problem can help your child develop the right solution that best fits the problem at hand. The list of alternatives available can also help your child come up with better solutions.

Your child should also weigh the consequences as the results have a huge impact on their lives. Two ways to weigh the results are by looking at how a decision will affect their current state and its effects in the long run.

Teaching your child how to weigh options and results can also enable them to think critically before deciding.

Teach Your Child To Trust Their Instincts

Your child can never go wrong when they trust their instincts. To trust your instincts simply means going with your immediate understanding of a situation without thinking twice or otherwise.

Instincts are personal, and you shouldn’t allow anyone else to give you a different opinion. Therefore, you should advise your child to always trust their instincts and make decisions that feel right for and by them.

For instance, if your child is in a certain relationship with someone else who doesn’t feel right, your child should not require anyone’s opinion to tell them otherwise. If your child’s instincts say that they should cut off the relationship, they should do that.

Decisions based on instincts are never wrong. However, they should also consider other factors, such as considering consequences.

Your Child Should Make Satisfying Decisions

Another great way your child can make the right decision is by choosing what makes them happy. Children, especially teenagers, are happy when they are satisfied with their lives. If they can make a life decision that will ultimately make them happy, this means they are making the right decision.

If getting a pet will make your child happy, they should decide what kind of pet they want, and this website provides more details about a pet dog. Therefore, you should advise your child to prioritize their happiness and make decisions that lead to a happy life.

They Should Consider Another Person’s Perspective

Another person’s perspective can be from an older person, such as a guardian, teacher, or family therapist. It is always refreshing to understand a certain situation from another person’s perspective.

The purpose of seeking another person’s opinion is to extend your knowledge, judgment and improve how you make decisions. However, the final decision will solely depend on you.

Children should understand that there are certain decisions they cannot make on their own. It would be best if they view a problem differently from how they see it. Doing so can lead to coming up with better-informed decisions.

Let Your Child Know That Peer Pressure is Real

Whether your child realizes it or not, they should know that peer pressure is a real thing. They should also know their closest friends are the main source of peer influence. And to help your child deal with peer pressure, they should boost their self-confidence.

Peer pressure can lead to making bad decisions that may have adverse health outcomes on your child. For instance, peer influence can lead to indulging in drinking alcohol, abusing drugs, or getting tattoos.

Peer pressure can lead your child into depression and increase their stress levels. As a parent, you should be keen on the kind of friends your child has, how often they spend time together and what activities they engage in. It can help you know whether your child is making decisions solely on their own or not.

Act As a Role Model

This is probably the most effective way to promote how your child makes decisions. It should start with you acting as a role model and making the right decisions for your family. Nobody expects you to be the ‘perfect’ parent, but you can be a role model to your child by doing what is right.

If you want your kid to make the right decisions, they will need someone from the family to look up to. It is sad for a child to grow up in a family where the mother is a drug addict while the father is an alcoholic. Children emulate their parents, and a child can end up adopting some of these behaviors.

The first step in becoming a role model is to reevaluate yourself and be honest about your current state. If you feel and know that you haven’t been acting right off late, it would be best to adapt to good behaviors that your child can emulate.

Ensure that you make the right decisions, and your child will follow suit in making great decisions in life.

Your Child Should Always Have a Goal in Mind

Having a goal in mind can help your child come up with the right decision. For instance, if your child can think of why they need to make a certain decision, this is a goal that can guide them to make the right decisions.

If your child can figure out the most important thing in their life, they can come up with the right decision. For instance, if their goal is to become successful, they can choose to work hard in school.

A goal can also ensure your child stays on track. They can avoid tempting situations that result in problems. Ensure your child knows what they want in life so that they can make the right decisions daily.

Make Decisions on Their Behalf

Lastly, as a parent, you should consider deciding for your child. Sometimes, your child may be unsure of what decisions to make. For instance, there is no harm in choosing the right dress your child can wear to a party or what shoes to buy at a store. They can also constantly make poor decisions.

As a parent, you have to interfere and make a decision, even if it means not consulting your child. This should mostly apply to life-changing decisions that can be a little tricky for your child to decide.

However, doing these can lead to your child becoming over-dependent on you making decisions on their behalf. It can affect how they make decisions when you are not around to help them out.

Therefore, if you decide to take full responsibility for your child’s decisions, you should know where to draw the line. Ensure that you involve your child while making major decisions.

Children need to understand the importance of making the right decisions in their lives. Thus, parents should ensure they help their children learn how to make the right decisions in their lives for a better future.
