You’ve been driving your car for a while now and love it. Its good to you and takes you where you want to go. But what do you do when that check engine light comes on? Since the car doesn’t just tell you what to do, do you just wait for it to turn off? No, but there are plenty of ways to check and see what’s going on with your car so you can get it fixed.
First things first, have you gotten gas recently?
I had the sad misfortune of having my check engine turn on a couple weeks after buying it. When trying to put gas into the car, it refused, as if the tank was full. But it wasn’t; something was wrong. We took it into the dealership’s service center (since I figured it was a warranty issue) and it was a problem with a vent in the gas tank. Fixed and for free thanks to the warranty.
If your check engine light comes on and you have the time, head into the shop to get it checked out. It could be something simple but you never know. As you can see, my issue was small but it caused a huge issue. Waiting to get it fixed wasn’t an option.
If you don’t have time to go into the shop, an auto parts store can also pull the code from your computer to see what the problem is. This will help figure out how much money you might need to spend on the fix and whether or not it is covered by your warranty. Waiting to find out isn’t an option! If you wait to fix your car and its engine could do more damage than you think.
