Everyone knows that when that magical age comes, most parents aren’t ready to give up their keys to their child. I have about 4 years until Hayden will be of age and I know I won’t be ready. Nope, not at all.
But just because you aren’t ready, doesn’t mean you can’t make sure your driver is ready. Below are some tips to make sure your teenage driver drives like you’d want them to drive. Safe drivers are the best drivers.
- Wear your seatbelt: Most important thing you will hear. I don’t care who you are, a seatbelt will save your life. Not all accidents are your fault.
- Put down your phone: The risk of talking or texting while driving is high, especially for young people. Eleven percent of drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were distracted. It is best to activate your “do not disturb” on your phone so you won’t be distracted.
- Watch your speed: I know getting behind the wheel by yourself can be fun and you tend to want to speed. Don’t. Posted speeds are there for a reason. Speeding causes accidents.
- Limit night driving: Night driving is slightly different from day driving and takes a little more concentration. As a parent, I plan on limiting the drive time at night.
- Limit passengers: The least amount of passengers means fewer distractions. It is harder to stay focused with all your friends in the car. Some states will tell you how many passengers you are allowed to have if you are under 18. It is to help travel safely.
- Make sure you have a safe car: It is your choice whether or not your child has a new or used car. However, making sure the car is safe is a top priority. Checking out your local dealership‘s used car lot will make sure you get what you need.
Make sure you come up with your own rules for your child to follow before you allow them to go out on their own in a car. Safe travels!
