Airbag safety tips

April 21, 2017 by Ashley T

We may drive every day but never really pay attention to all the safety features that are built into your car. I know I don’t. I totally forget about the air bags unless I need them. But I’m glad they are there.

Did you know that newer cars generally have not one or 2 but up to 12 airbags? Instead of just residing in the steering wheel or dashboard, they can also be found in front of the knees, in rear doors, and even in the roof. I think that’s awesome. It makes sure that every person in your car will be safe. Air bags are getting smarter. They can now determine the severity of the crash, the size and posture of occupants, and whether you’re wearing a seat belt. They can also adjust their deployment based on these factors.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make sure you know more about airbags.

airbag safety tips

  • Buckle up: Airbags are meant to be used WITH seatbelts. In a crash, not only will your seat belt help keep you secure, it’ll also keep you from hitting a rapidly inflating air bag.
  • Keep your distance: Drivers should sit at least 10 inches away from the steering wheel. If you’re small/short and can’t sit more than 10 inches away, try tilting the steering wheel down.
  • Put your kids in the back: No matter how much your child wants to ride in the front, the safest place for children is the backseat. I always tell my children that. I also wouldn’t let my brother ride in the front until he was 16.
  • If your airbag indicator light goes off, you that something is wrong.First, check your car’s manual. It may be a sign that your airbag needs professional service to make sure it’s ready to work properly. You can take your car into your local dealership to make sure it is working properly.

Always know your airbag safety and teach your children when they get older. It can save a life.
