Buying a new car is a big decision. You make payments on this new car just as you would when buying a house. The expectation for buying this new car is that this car will get you where you want to go when you need to.
However, your car expects some things from you as well during this process.
During the time you’ll be making payments, you’ll need to make sure you pay attention to the upkeep on your car. Maintaining the car prevents you from problems popping up down the road. Therefore, keeping your money for other important things. Regular maintenance is really all about catching the smaller bits of wear and tear before they become big problems.
What should you be doing when it comes to your car?
- Check the levels of your fluids as often as you can. These fluids will include the coolant, oil, Brake Fluid, Power Steering, and Transmission, windshield wipers, and radiator. Add fluid as needed and keep an eye on them. If they drop too low, you can have problems with them.
- Check your tire pressure and make sure there aren’t any leaks in any of the tires as well. You’ll want to keep your tire pressure at the correct amount to not only help the tires to wear correct, but it also helps with gas mileage.
- Have your battery checked to make sure it is holding a charge the way it should be. This isn’t an every week type of thing: ever 3 months is good.
- Get an oil change as recommended by the manufacturer. This could be between 3,000 to 10,000 miles. Following the manufacturer’s rules makes sure you keep your car running at peak performance.
- Rotate your tires around the same time you get your oil change or before. Rotating your tires regularly helps them to wear evenly. You can also have your wheel alignment checked when this is done.
Unsure of where to get the last couple done? The dealership’s service area can help you with a lot of it. I know when I take my car in, a lot of the top items are complementary when other services are scheduled. They want your car to be maintained just as much as you do.
