It is a law in Ohio to have your headlights on when it is raining. But even if your state doesn’t have that law, turning your headlights on will help with visibility for not only you but for other people around you. They will be able to see you better with your headlights on.
Be Careful when Hydroplaning
When your tires lose traction due to excess water on top of the road, that is called Hydroplaning. Your vehicle will begin to slide uncontrollably. It’s easy to hydroplane: all you need is a small amount of rain on the road and a speed of more than 35 miles per hour. If your tires have a lot of wear and tear, you are more highly likely to hydroplane. If you start to hydroplane, let off the gas pedal slowly, and steer straight until you regain control. If your car starts to spin, turn your wheel in the direction that the vehicle is spinning, slowly.
Turn off Cruise Control
Cruise control can cause you to lose control when there is rain or snow on the roads. When using cruise control, it keeps to car at a constant speed. The problem is that if you hydroplane, the car will speed up because it doesn’t feel as if it’s going the correct speed.
Slow Down
Overall, if you feel uncomfortable driving in the rain, slow down. The higher the speed, the less control you could and will have over your car. Slow down and allow some extra time to get to you destination.
