3 Causes Of Dangerous Electrical Faults In The Home

November 25, 2020 by Ashley T

Electrical problems in the home can be incredibly dangerous and can lead to electric shocks or fires. So, it’s absolutely essential that you deal with any maintenance issues right away and you learn how to prevent electrical problems in the first place.

If you want to prevent electrical issues, you need to understand what the underlying causes are, so you can take steps to keep your electrics in good working order. Knowing what the causes are will also help you to spot the early signs, so you can call out an electrician right away and avoid any danger to you and your family. These are some of the common causes of electrical problems in the home.

Outdated Wiring

Most people don’t have a clue when their wiring was last updated. This isn’t too much of an issue if you live in a new home. But if you live in an old home, you could be using outdated wiring that hasn’t been updated for 50 years and you wouldn’t even know it. The thing is, old wiring wasn’t designed to run as many appliances as we use in modern households, so it can’t take the strain.

If the electrics cut out when you switch on your toaster, it’s likely that outdated wiring is your problem. Call out an electrician and get them to take a look and they will be able to tell you if the wiring needs to be replaced or not. Always get a professional to rewire your home because it’s one of those DIY jobs that are too dangerous to do yourself.

Mice

Mice and rats love to chew through wires, so if your electrics are not working properly, it’s worth checking whether you have a pest problem. Start in the attic because this is usually where they get in. If you do have a problem, you need to first work out where they are getting in and plug all of the gaps. Hiring services from companies like pest control reno, has proved to be the best way to get rid of pests.

Then, you can start using traps to catch and remove the mice. If you need more advice, this is the source that we used for our information on how to get rid of mice and it has some great tips. If in doubt, you may need to call out a pest control company like pest control minneapolis but you should try to deal with them on your own first because you will save a lot of money.

Power Surges

Homes are equipped with cut off devices that shut power off if there is a sign of a problem. If there is a large power surge to the house, you will experience a momentary shut off. This can be caused by things like lightning, so if it happens during a storm, you don’t need to be too worried.

However, if you find that it is happening a lot, there may be a bigger problem and it can damage your wiring and any appliances that are plugged in. It’s always best to get your electrics checked over after frequent power surges to make sure that the wiring is not damaged.

These are some of the most common causes of electrical faults in the home, so make sure to watch out for them.
