Are You Teaching your children To Protect The Planet The Way You Should?

March 22, 2021 by Ashley T

With environmental issues like global warming becoming more and more pressing, it’s fair to say that this is a problem your kids will likely have to face down the line. The next generation is the future, after all, and unfortunately, it’ll be left to them to undo a lot of the damage that we’ve caused thus far.

But, to ensure that the next generation is the positive change this planet needs, we as parents need to take significant steps now to ensure they provide the protections we know they can. Whether you’ve always worked to teach your kids about these focuses, or whether you’ve never considered it before, keep on reading to find out what you can do to arm them with the eco-tools they’ll most likely need in the future.

# 1 – Show them why it matters

The first thing and best thing you can do here is to show your kids precisely why they should bother fighting the eco fight. Make sure that you get them out in nature as often as you can, whether that’s for forest walks, days in the park, or even trips to take in the local wildlife. These may seem like small steps and, honestly, the chances are that they’re things you do with the family anyway. But, by painting such activities with the environment in mind, you stand the best chance at bringing this message home for your youngsters, even at this young age.

# 2 – Make environmental focuses the norm

‘Environmentally friendly’ wasn’t a term most of us heard when we were growing up, not least one that we knew to adhere by. But, now that we know more about our environmental impact, it’s our responsibility to make eco-focuses the norm for our kids growing up. As such, you should recycle as standard, seek energy from renewable sources like those provided by Choose Solar, and forever highlight the importance of turning things off when they aren’t in use. This way, your kids are far more likely to grow up with these same positive habits, creating a beneficial environmental loop that makes a huge difference moving forward.

# 3 – Find fun ways to get them involved

Lastly, it’s always worth finding fun ways for your kids to get involved with environmental protections, again ensuring positive habits, but also teaching them how rewarding such efforts can be. This needn’t even be complex, with something as simple as a bug hotel is a great place to start. From here, you might like to take your kids out litter picking or encourage them into joining a local gardening initiative. And, of course, don’t forget to reuse and recycle within every crafting session to highlight the importance of sustainable practices!

# 4 – Practice What You Preach

The final thing that we are going to mention is that you should always actually be doing the things that you are talking to them about. Telling them about the environment and how to protect it is one thing, but why would they listen if you are not doing any of these things? For example, if you are talking to them about alternative power sources, try to power your home, at least partly, this way. You can find a solar installer who is willing to come and install panels onto your house or in your garden without much hassle, and then you are showing your children the practicalities of what you are talking about.

Even if they seem young now, it’s never too early to start showing your kids the responsibilities on their shoulders where the environment is concerned. With these tips to hand, you can certainly rest easy that you’ve done your bit to make a difference where you can!
