Own a 4X4 Family SUV? Here are 4 Safety Tips You Should Remember

May 11, 2021 by Ashley T

Off-roaders, 4X4s, or 4WDs, whatever the name you give them, four-wheel-drive vehicles are the most reliable and versatile types of cars you can own, no matter the time of the year. There are many benefits of owning a 4X4 SUV; they have more traction, elevated driving position, and most importantly, they have flexibility with storage and space for your big family.

However, like with every other car, safety comes firsts when you talk of off-roading. And if you are new to 4X4, it is essential to know some safety tips before taking it to the road.

Know your Vehicle

The type of off-road adventure you will have depends on the 4WD vehicle you have. But nowadays, most 4X4 cars are not designed for actual off-road action, and therefore, if you really want to enjoy it, you will have to consider a 4WD with a skeleton frame. This frame is built to endure any off-road obstacle. Ensure that you are familiar with how your 4WD system works, and make sure you have a manual locking hub.

To know the specific depth of water you can cross, make sure that you know where your engine’s computer and air intake are located.

Have the Necessary Supplies and Equipment

Off-roading with your 4WD means that you have to think harder about what to bring along. These are what you will use when you get stuck, break down or run into any other problem with your car. Some items that you should have include:

  • Hi-lift jack
  • Air compressors
  • Winch and accessories
  • Tire kit
  • Vehicle repair kit
  • Extra tires
  • Recovery gear

Your 4WD can break down, get stuck or even have an accident. Therefore, in addition to all these necessary supplies, it is essential to have the contact information of relentless car accident lawyers just in case you need it.

Flexibility

When driving a 4WD, it is crucial to understand that things might break, the weather might change, trails may close, and routes might close. In short, things might not go as you all planned. Therefore, it is always advisable to be flexible when it comes to changing your plans.

For example, if you find yourself stuck on a trail and have a hard time, it may be time to rethink your next move. First, take your time to re-assess your safety before you continue. Then, if it is getting late, instead of rushing back, find someplace to pack and get help.

It is way safer to stay within your comfort zone than continuing with the journey and making more mistakes.

Airing Down

Traction is essential for every off-road activity. And one of the best ways to increase traction is airing down your car’s tires. You can make a big difference by airing down your tires with just one pressure. Regardless of the terrain you are driving on, airing down gives your vehicle more traction. Therefore, ensure that you check the surface and re-inflate the tires whenever needed.

It is important to note that how much you can air down your tires will depend on various things, so you might have to experiment until you get it right. Don’t forget to air back your tires when you are back on the road.

Most 4WD drivers learn by mistakes; however, the above safety tips can help you and your family stay safe while on the road and off-road. Ensure that you maintain your vehicle, know your car, have the necessary supplies, and know when to air down.
