How to change your car’s headlight

February 7, 2017 by Ashley T

There aren’t many things that can’t do myself because I haven’t learned but I do know how to change a car’s headlight. I’ve had to change it on my previous car and I hate to have a light out too long so I change it when I notice it’s out on my car. Personally, I think the hardest part is finding the bulb you need. So you may need to head to a dealership like Bosak Motors who carries the parts you need. Follow these simple steps to change it yourself.

change your car's headlight

  • Identify your bulb type.  You should be able to find out with the manual in the car but if you take the old bulb into the dealership or auto store, they can help you find the right bulb.
  • Open and prop your vehicle’s hood. Make sure you use the prop in the car, it is made to help you and is perfect for the car.
  • Remove the power connector from the back of the headlight. This may require a slight turn to get it loose.
  • Remove the dust cover from the back of headlight. This also may require a small twist to get loose.
  • Grasp the housing of the bulb and pull it out. This step may require a little wiggling to get it loose. Don’t pull too hard or anything, you don’t want to break the bulb.
  • Make sure your bulb is free of dust and fingerprints: wipe it with pre-moistened alcohol wipe or rubbing alcohol on a dust-free cloth.
  • Line up the bulb housing with the open socket and insert carefully. Make sure it’s secure.
  • Slide the bulb back in place and twist if necessary to make sure it’s locked into its spot.
  • Replace the dust cover and power connector.
  • Check the headlights to ensure the bulb and connection are working.
  • Close the hood.

Yay! Done! If you are still having trouble, contact your dealership or local auto store.
