Miami is well known for its beaches and bars but the water is always the best part of a holiday to this awesome destination. The sea is warm and perfect for any number of water sports, from fishing to SCUBA diving. If you love getting in the water, this is definitely the place to be.
So, top up your vacation fund and let’s start planning your trip! Whether you fancy sipping bubbly on the deck of a ship while your personal crew take you to some of the most beautiful sites or you would prefer to be 15 feet under the waves exploring coral reefs, here are a few things you might like to try.
Boat Hire
It’s easy to rent a boat in Miami for a day or even longer. This is ideal if you have a specific destination in mind and want to enjoy time with your family. Most boats come with a captain so you can sit back and relax, knowing that you are fully cared for on the water. The boats will usually take you to your destination of choice so you’re well advised to check out some of the best swimming and snorkeling spots before you leave the marina.
The Biscayne National Park is an easy journey to make as it is just off the shore of Miami. The park is dedicated to the protection of a range of endangered species and mangroves so while it’s okay to have a look, please do behave and use the buoys to moor. This area is brilliant for snorkeling as there is plenty of coral to look at as well as fish.
SCUBA Diving
Florida is a brilliant spot for SCUBA diving and there are plenty of locations near Miami for you to have a go. While more experienced divers can enjoy a wide range of deeper wreck sites, there are still locations suitable for beginners.
Naturally, Biscayne National Park is a top resort for diving but you might also like to try Molasses Reef off Key Largo. This site is much further south but is shallower, making it suitable for less experienced divers. There is a large profile of coral heads at around 15 feet (3m) but the site also offers deeper dives for those feeling more ambitious. There is a bit of drift here, which can make for a relaxing dive where the water simply carries you along.
Water Sports
Miami Beach is ideal for relaxing in the sun and playing in the sand. This is also the best place to find some of the more coastal water sports like paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing. Most shops will welcome beginners and more advanced customers alike and these are usually suitable for the whole family. Even better, if you pick one of the more athletic activities like surfing, you’ll definitely earn your dinner!
Whatever your love on the water, Miami certainly offers a broad spectrum of activities that anyone can enjoy. The real question is, which one are you going to pick first?
