Need Help Buying A Family Car? Look Here!

October 8, 2021 by Ashley T

When your family is in need of additional transport, the one thing that you want to do is ensure that you are buying a car that suits the size of your family. Buying a car for personal use means that you can often afford to be a little freer with the way you soup it up. For family use, however, you need to be looking at several different aspects of the car to make it work for your family. There is nothing more important than the safety and wellbeing of your family and when you are car shopping. This is so important if you want to make sure that once you get onto the road, you are going to be safe as you go.

You have to take car buying with Portsmouth Ford extremely seriously if you’re buying a car to suit your family. You have to make good choices and ensure that you keep the kids safe, too. If you have little ones, they must be in the right car seats and that means a car that fits the best seats across the back of the car. If you have babies under 2, rear-facing is best so you need enough room at the back of the car to fit them all in without any issues. So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the things that you need to know about buying a family car.

  1. Always go for safety first. There is nothing more important than the safety of your family. Make sure that wherever you buy your car, the safety ratings are high and the car itself has been crash tested at a higher speed. This includes the car seats that you are looking at for the kids. They need to be ready for any kind of crash – just in case. The car has to be safe, too, so think adaptive cruise control, auto brakes, blind spot warnings and parking assistance. Safety matters in every single way, and that means you can ensure that you are careful and ready for anything on the road.
  2. Consider the size of your family. It is much easier to buy a car when you have two adults and two children in the vehicle, but finding a car that manages to carry all of your kids when you have more than one can make a big difference to the car you choose. Seven-seater vehicles are popular with families because they can not only fit the kids, but they fit the luggage, shopping, strollers and more. A good trunk space is important for a family car, and it’s a big consideration when you are driving around with a larger family.
  3. Are you on or off road? Whether you are planning road trips off-road or not doesn’t matter. The point here is that you need to know the type of car that will work for the area in which you live. If you are in the city, then a car that can handle city roads is a great place to start, but if you are living in the sticks, you want a car that can handle off-road capabilities. 4-wheel drive is a great idea if you are mostly on gravel roads and dirt tracks.
  4. Do you have hobbies? It’s vital that you consider this when you’re buying a family car. Perhaps you like to drive to tracks to cycle? Well, you will need a car that has a big enough space for a bike rack and a roof rack to pack on the extras. You should also consider whether you and your family love to caravan. You might want to tow a trailer or a caravan behind you, and if that’s the case, you’re going to find it easier with a bigger car that has a tow bar behind it.
  5. The budget matters. Financial health really does matter when you are choosing a car for the family. The last thing that you want to do is choose a car that doesn’t work for the whole group, and you don’t want to bankrupt yourself trying to pay for a new car when you can make sure that you have the budget for the car that you want in the first place.

  1. The must-haves. There are always vehicular must-haves that come to mind when you are buying your own car. If you’re concerned with functional aspects of the car, then you should speak to a mechanic about it. There are a lot of cars that aren’t in the niche, luxury market that can still offer high levels of style, equipment and safety so consider those first.
  2. Always do your research. If you know the type of car that you want, do the research before you set foot in a dealership. It’s so important that you get what you want for the price you can afford and the best thing that you can do is get to know the local dealers to see if you can get the cost you want, too.
  3. Go for a test drive. If you have the kids with you, make sure that you test drive the vehicle before you buy. The best reason for this is to ensure that you are going to fit everyone in and everyone finds the car comfortable. You also have to see that the additions in the car are worth it and the best thing that you can do for that is to test drive the car so that you can get a feel for it!
  4. Learn how the new car works. If you’ve never used proper GPS systems and parking assistance before, then take the car for a few trips on your own while you get to know it. If there are any tips or tricks with the car, the manual should be able to help! You want to know that your car is going to be intelligent on the roads and it’ll give you everything that you need.
