I was given a 3-pack of Marukan products to review and create a recipe. All opinions below are my own.
I am a huge fan of Chinese food. I’m pretty sure I could eat it every day if I could. However, I’ve been looking for recipes that can make myself without spending a ton of money on ingredients. I’ve been trying different recipes and learning what I do and don’t like but my major concern has always been whether or not my boys would eat it. There are only a couple of recipes that my sons both like. I do know that they both like sweet and sour chicken.

The recipe for sweet and sour chicken uses an ingredient that I’ve never used before: rice vinegar. Marukan Rice Vinegar is naturally gluten free and non-GMO. It contains no sodium, fat, artificial ingredients or calories. The biggest test was making sure it worked with my recipe and that the boys loved it. I have to say, it is Hayden approved. Noah is on this kick where he doesn’t like to eat much of anything new so he didn’t even try it. But here it is, my recipe for sweet and sour chicken.
Sweet and Sour Chicken

- 3 pieces of chicken breast, cut up into pieces and covered in a flour/cornstarch mixture
- 6 tablespoons rice vinegar
-
3/4 cup water
-
3 tablespoons tomato paste
-
4 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
-
3/8 teaspoon chile sauce (add more for heat)
-
1 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 6 teaspoons water
Directions:
- Fry the chicken in oil until cooked through. The Flour/cornstarch mixture will create a breaded cover over the chicken. Drain and set aside.
-
Bring all ingredients (except for the cornstarch mixture) to a boil.
-
Give the cornstarch/water mixture a quick restir and add, stirring quickly to thicken.
-
Pour over chicken.
