Things to do with your kids in Athens County, OH

June 15, 2018 by Ashley T

This is a sponsored post brought to you by the Athens County Visitors Bureau. All opinions are my own.

We love to take family trips. Traveling is something we love to do although we don’t get to do it as often as we’d like. We don’t live far from a lot of wonderful places to visit so we decided to take a day trip to Athens County, OH. Athens is home to Ohio University and the 30-mile meal. Matter of fact, we did Brewed at the bikeway last year and loved it. So, we decided to take the kids.

But what is there to do in Athens County for kids?

Athens County
Plenty! We spent a Saturday exploring the county with our kids, enjoyed the sites and had fun. Here are places we recommend to visit while in Athens County.

Athens Farmers Market

Athens County
The Athens Farmers Market is open every Saturday year round and is a community event showcasing farmers, orchardists, specialty food producers, bakers, horticulturalists, cheese makers and many other food-based entrepreneurs. We got to try salsa, tasted some delicious popcorn and saw all the fruits and veggies that were being sold.

Athens County
You can find the Farmers Market at 1000 East State Street.

Uptown Athens / Court Street

Athens County
Court Street happens to be the place to be especially since Ohio University is right there. They have shops to check out, food, bars, bookstores, etc.

Some of the places we stopped in were:

  • Cross Court Cards & Gifts
  • Little Professor Book Center
  • Import House
  • Blue Eagle Music
  • Athens Underground
  • Bluetique

Athens County
There is plenty more that we didn’t see but plan on visiting next time we head to Athens.

Court Street Diner

Athens County
We stopped at the Court Street Diner for lunch and it was definitely worth stopping. Very kid friendly and serves breakfast all day… That is my favorite part! I am crazy about eating breakfast for dinner (or lunch) so it was perfect.

Athens County
Everyone except Paul had breakfast. I had these delicious cinnamon bun pancakes. I mean, they are awesome. Everyone loved their breakfast and it, of course, was a great price for 5 people. You can find the Court Street Cafe at 18 N. Court Street.

The Ridges Nature Trail Stair Climb

I think this was the most fascinating part of our day. You start at the bottom of a wooden staircase. Climb up that staircase to a large open area that is beautiful. It is the start of the Ridges Trail and shows three cemeteries that were used with the Athens Insane Asylum.

Athens County
You can find the Trail stair climb across from the Dairy Barn Art Center (8000 Dairy Lane).

Dairy Barn Arts Center

We had a tour of the beautiful Dairy Barn Arts Center and I have so much to share with that, so I’ll share it next week in another post. Make sure to check back!

Little Fish Brewing Company

I covered Little Fish in my previous post but we had to make sure to come back. They have a play area for the kids and a picnic area with a food truck! We got there just in time for an outdoor concert.

Athens County
The kids had some fun and played with the other kids. My husband and I got to enjoy a beer while watching them. They even have homemade soda for the kids. So, they were happy as well. You can find Little Fish Brewing Company at 8675 Armitage Rd.

Whit’s Frozen Custard

We couldn’t leave Athens without Stopping at Whit’s Frozen Custard. We had run out of time for dinner so ice cream before the ride home was a must. The kids chose exactly what they wanted and so did my husband and I.

Athens County
My turtle sundae was delicious! You get a lot of ice cream for the price and you will enjoy it. Make sure to try something different from the menu everytime you visit.

There is something for everyone in Athens County. Make sure you take the time to check it out!
