You have read all the books and scoured all the websites looking for the best information to help prepare you for motherhood. While you may think you are ready for this new journey, you probably are not as prepared as you think you are. Here are three of the most common unexpected challenges of motherhood that nobody prepares you to handle.
The Fatigue
Becoming a mom means that you are now always on call. Finding time to rest can be a real challenge when your little ones are constantly clamoring for your attention. While you may not have the time or luxury to be able to take long naps, you can still fit in the coveted mini nap if you are willing to get creative. Try sneaking in naps when your baby sleeps. Once your kids get older, you may have more time to rest, but then you will be faced with the challenge of fitting in time for yourself around their busy schedules. Do not be above hiding chocolate in the car and sneaking in a little time to relax and pamper yourself while shuttling your children around.
The Damage
If you are like most new moms, you probably have not considered how much motherhood is going to destroy your home. Experienced moms know that kids are masters of plumbing problems and being able to find ways to destroy your drains in record time. In addition to plumbing issues, you should get used to broken windows from errant balls, wrecked carpets, and holes in the wall. The good news is that all these issues can be fixed.
The Fear
Nobody warned you that becoming a mom comes with a host of fears. What you also probably do not know is that these fears never go away. Instead, they just simply change and evolve. In the beginning, you have fears that your baby is not eating enough or that he or she will hurt him or herself when he or she becomes mobile. As your child ages, you will worry about school issues, setting him or her out on the roads to drive and then letting him or her make his or her own way in adulthood. The bottom line is that you should just simply accept that this fear is going to follow you around forever.
While it comes with a myriad of challenges, the positive aspects of motherhood cannot be overstated. Your efforts will bless the generations that follow. You are more prepared than you think. The only thing left to do is jump right in and embrace it all.
