Household Items You Never Thought You Could Make At Home

May 13, 2020 by Ashley T

With everyone stuck at home this summer, it’s a good time to start a new hobby. If you’re already into a bit of craft and DIY, then why not have a go at making your own household items? You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make toiletries and cleaning products from the ingredients you have in your kitchen. You can also add a cute little flair to some used pots and cups, to make new creative accessories. It’s all about upcycling and finding a new use for what you’ve got hidden away in the house. Here are some fun things you never thought you could make at home.

Adorable Accessories

If you’re looking for a creative hobby, or you’re a fan of things all things cute, check out these designs. The secret to making everything that little bit more adorable is adding a tiny little bunny face, don’t tell anyone. If you’re looking for a great activity with your kids this summer, why not decorate your own plant pots? You could make a herb garden on the window sill. With as little as a sharpie pen, you can get them to create their own adorable accessories.

Bath and Body

Shampoo is one thing that’s easier to make than you think. A tablespoon of baking soda, 1.5 cups of water, cornstarch to add thickness, and your choice of essential oils makes the perfect natural homemade shampoo. You can even condition your hair afterward with a blend of avocado, olive oil, and lavender.  Check out the best natural conditioners for your hair type.

Making your own soap is super fun as you get to balance intoxicating scents with creamy natural bases. Try out this delicious recipe. There’s nothing more luxurious than adds aromantic essential oils to a creamy milk-base. Your skin will be thanking you for days. Have a go at some homemade natural exfoliators as well. With just a few ingredients such as rock salt, essential oils, green tea, and citrus flavors, you can find the perfect DIY body scrub. It’s good enough to eat!

Car Cleaning Products

It’s easy to make your own cleaning products for your car. For simple sprays and cleaners, you can usually find what you need at home. Here are some of the most effective recipes to get your car sparkling this summer.

Windshield Cleaner

Equal parts white vinegar and water, with a few drops of lemon juice. Pour it into a spray bottle with a funnel, and shake before use. Be careful with metal parts, as vinegar should never be used on aluminum.

Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner

Combine a tablespoon of baking soda with half a cup of white vinegar, gradually mixing until forms a paste. This works as a great stain remover. Go over it with your windshield cleaner, add a pinch of salt and a few drops on anti-freeze if you wish. This will give it a clean finish.

Dashboard Cleaner

Go over first with your basic all-purpose cleaner recipe. Mix equal parts white vinegar and wash, shake, and spruce up your interior. Then make a polish from one part lemon juice and two parts olive oil. This will add a nice sheen, be sure to buff off any excess.

These work just as well as store-bought products! For the final touch, there are even ways to make your own air freshener online. Check out these personalized designs and fragrances.

DIY Yard Decorations

There are plenty of things you can use to decorate your garden. Look for old items like old tech and kitchenware you never use. You could make a plant out of anything. Try using old ceramics to decorate concrete stepping stones. This takes a little skill so get some tips online. The best part is you get to smash old plates with a hammer, so you can take out your latest frustrations! You can order concrete mix online and have it delivered if you’re really serious.

If you are interested in making your yard a little more wildlife-friendly then you can make your own bird feeders. The most important one to remember for your garden is, of course, homemade compost. Collect your organic waste in a container, things like eggshells, vegetable, and fruit peelings, and bread crusts. It’s a natural fertilizer and will do wonders for your flower beds. As you can see you have plenty of projects to get on with this summer, don’t forget to get the kids involved. There’s enough work to go around.
