Our homes are our castles, but sometimes they can run into problems. As time goes by, things break, and, as owners, it’s usually up to us to fix them.

Wobbly Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans are extremely welcome in warm weather. They create a pleasant breeze that permeates your entire home.
Unfortunately, they have an annoying design flaw: they tend to develop a wobble over time. It happens because of imbalances in the blades. As they rotate, they pull on the central column, tugging it out of its socket.
Usually, you can solve this problem quite easily. First, check each blade is secure. Then, tighten any loose bolts that might have come out of place during operation.
Popcorn Ceilings
Forty years ago, popcorn ceilings were all the rage. Today, not so much. Things have moved on, and people no longer look at ugly, tacky-looking patterns on their ceilings.
Fortunately, removing a popcorn ceiling you hate is an option. It’s relatively easy to do manually. Just hire a handyperson. However, if the ceiling was installed before 1979, you’ll need to test it for asbestos. If builders did use asbestos, you would need to hire professional asbestos removers to get rid of it.
Mouse Invasions
Rodents love living in people’s homes. They provide warmth, shelter, and, critically, defense against predators.
Unfortunately, mice also spread disease, which means that if you do find them in your home, you need to get rid of them fast.
Common signs of mouse invasion include rustling under the floorboards at night and droppings on your carpet. If you suspect that you might have an issue with pest control, you’ll need to call in professionals.
Watermarks On Wood Furniture
Watermarks on wood furniture are another common bugbear that can adversely affect your enjoyment of your home. It just doesn’t look good.
However, there is a method you can try to deal with it. Try covering the watermark with a dry cotton cloth. Go over it with a medium-hot iron for a few seconds. The heat should help to reduce the water mark’s appearance.
If that fails, you can dry wipe the mark with a soft rag and denatured alcohol.
Moldy Shower Grout
Moldy shower grout is almost impossible to clean. No matter how much you scrub, it just won’t come out.
This happens because mold grows into the grout material itself, essentially impregnating it with black.
Your best bet here is to use bleach. Bleach doesn’t remove the mold, but it does discolor it, returning it to white.
Failing that, you might want to regrout. It’s relatively easy to do with the right equipment.
Streaky Windows
You think that cleaning your windows will leave them looking sparkling and clear. But that’s rarely how it works out in practice. Washing windows often leaves them looking streaky and, in many cases, worse than before.
Don’t clean windows on a sunny day, as sunlight interacts with cleaning fluids, leaving streaks. Instead, could you wait for it to get cloudy outside? This way, you can clear away any solution before it dries on.
Belfast Sink Stains
Belfast sinks are attractive kitchen additions, but they have an annoying tendency to stain. Tannins from food can make their way into the enamel over time.
Fortunately, there’s a strange solution: toothpaste. Toothpaste contains detergents and agents targeting food stains on the enamel, making it the ideal choice.
Squirt some toothpaste on the stain and then leave it for about 15 minutes. Then sprinkle some baking soda on the affected area and rub it with a soft, clean cloth.
Fingerprints On Your Steel Appliances
Steel appliances look great and perform well, but they also have a nasty habit of attracting fingerprints – not what you want.
What can you do about this problem? The answer will surprise you. The trick here is to cover the appliance in a thin layer of oil. After cleaning your steel appliance, dab a tiny quantity of olive oil in a clean rag. Then rub it all over the surface so that it creates a thin layer. This layer will then prevent fingerprint marks by blending with the oil from your fingers.
Rotting Window Frame Wood
If you notice that your window frame is starting to rot, try applying some epoxy solution. It will harden in around 30 minutes, after which you can repaint both it and the surrounding wood.
