Today’s Style and my #naturalhair update

June 6, 2013 by Ashley T

This month marks about 21 months on my journey with natural hair. I am proud to say that amount of months because I seriously thought that I wouldn’t be able to make it this far. I didn’t believe that I would make it past my first 6 months. I didn’t believe that I would be able to keep up with my hair and make sure it wouldn’t break off. I didn’t believe that I would have the support behind kepping it going as much as I do. Its very important to have a support system and I’m glad I do. If you haven’t been following my natural hair journey, you can check out the category natural hair to see it.

This past weekend I straighten my hair because my brother was graduating from highschool. I normally only straighten my hair once a month… maybe. It takes a lot longer than just doing a style because I don’t want to damage my hair with all the heat. But because it was so hot and kind of humid this weekend, this has been my style most of the week:

Loving it right? Here is a photo of the top of the braid. I have to focus as hard as I can to get the braid going striaght down the side of my head.. then I sleep on it to make sure its flat.

You can’t tell from either picture but a couple of months ago I did color my hair a lighter color brown. The color has growing out a lot so now its making me think of other things to do with my hair. I have seriously thought about adding some blond to my hair. I’m not going to do it unless I really make up my mind to but I know what it could look like and I know how badly it could end up, which is why I haven’t done it yet. But this is my sister. I love this style and if I would do it, this is the way I want it.

My goals for the next couple of months?
Just keep growing my hair out and see how long it can get. I won’t be coloring it anytime soon so don’t worry about that. But this is the longest its ever been and I want to keep that going. I’m so proud of myself for being able to do this and home that I don’t ever decide to cut it all off and start again because I have no idea if I could start over.

Have you completed a goal lately? It could be anything! Let me know what it is so we can celebrate together.

I have yet to try henna but I've been thinking about it. Thanks Kelly and good luck on your journey!

You did a great braid in your hair and did you do it yourself? I use to have a french braid when my hair was long but never talented enough to do it myself. I'd make a mess so someone would have to do it for me. Keep us updated with the hair progress. I do love your sisters style and color.

I do the braids myself.. my mom taught me when I was younger. Its funny though because I have a hard time braiding other people's hair but mine always looks great!
