When I started my journey to weight loss, I had plenty of ideas on how to keep myself accountable for everything I did. I made sure that I headed to the gym at least 3 times a week, I did plenty of walking and tried to keep moving as much as I could. However, I never really saw how much moving I did. So every day I “thought” I did enough and just kept pushing. But I never saw any change. Then I was offered the chance to review the Up by Jawbone.

The Up by Jawbone is a wristband and app that tracks how you sleep, move and eat—then helps you use that information to feel your best. Now I know what your thinking: how is a little wristband and an app gonna help me with my fitness? Well, my journey can explain that. First of all, the main thing the Up tracks on its own is your steps. So on any given day, you will know how many steps you’ve taken that day. From that measurement, you will know approximately how many calories you have burned that day, how much time you were actually active and how much you were idle. Check out the screenshot below:

As you can see, I walked 23,200 steps that day. The daily average you are supposed to do in a day is 10,000 which is why I hit my move goal by 231%. It also gives you your steps in miles, which is interesting to see. I never knew that I could walk over 10 miles in a day without even realizing it. You can also track one instance such as your work out at the gym. The screenshot I am showing you below was an hour-long Zumba class that I attend twice a week. Check out how many steps I took in an hour!

I’m not sure exactly how the intensity is tracked but for me, I felt like I was at a 10! LOL! Now let’s talk about your eating and sleeping habits. Switching the mode is super easy, you just press and hold the button and now you are in sleep mode. It will tell you how long you were awake and keep track of a deep sleep, light sleep and if you woke up. I’m not sure how sensitive it is to you being awake because I wake up about 2-3 times a night (yeah, I’m a light sleeper) and it doesn’t always recognize that I’m awake. Here is a sample reporting of sleep:

What don’t I like about the Up by Jawbone? Not much. I wish there was an easier way to connect the Up band to your app. Right now, you plug it into your phone and it will download the information to your app. It’s not that hard to do and as long as the app is open, you just plug it in really quick and it uploads.
*Update: The newer bands, such as the UP3, connects wirelessly! Yay!

If you are looking for something to help you keep active, this is something you should look into. I know what I’ve been more active because I am able to track it with the Up band. You can purchase the Up3 by Jawbone on Amazon. The app for the iPhone is free to download.
