My family and I enjoy visiting museums within our hometown and have even traveled to different cities to check out other. We are total believers in never being to old to learn something new. Plus, I love being able to teach my children whatever I can. Since we only live a short distance from Chicago, we were excited to be able to visit the Field Museum.
Once inside the museum, we took a glance around. You can’t pass up the beauty inside the building. I couldn’t believe how massive the building was. Before we started viewing the exhibits, I downloaded the Field Museum mobile app. This app allows you to unlock more parts of the tour that aren’t available as you walk around. This can include more pictures, written information or videos. First part of our tour? We visited the Opening the Vaults: Wonders of the 1893 World’s Fair exhibit.
Once inside the exhibit, we got the chance to view the 200+ artifacts and specimens from the fair grounds. The picture above is a screen shot of the app when you can the QR code at the accounting ledger! I watched the video with Hayden to find out more information about what was listed in the ledger. Did you know what the Field Museum was founded to commemorate the fair? The original collections displayed where all displayed at the fair. My boys loved the view the bones of all the animals. Noah was even scared at one point when he saw the lion but he got over that quickly when he got to play the simulated instruments. The simulated instruments are a perfect example of how the museum uses new technology to make discoveries on very old objects.
I think the boys’ favorite part of the museum would have to be all the animals. I think we spent the most time looking at the different types of animals and explaining where each one lives (or used to live). I loved being able to see how tall animals were in comparison to us. The Black Bear was about as tall as my husband and I put together!
Our last stop before leaving was to check out the dinosaurs. I think this was my husband’s favorite part. It was interesting to see how the dinosaurs changed over the years. Matter of fact, it was part of the exhibit “Evolving Planet”. We learned a lot about what the world used to look like.
Overall, my family and I enjoyed our special time at The Field Museum and can’t wait for the chance to head back. If you go to visit, make sure you download The Field Museum Tours mobile app to help you through your journey.
