This Mother’s Day, I’m working with Clever Girls in support of Macy’s Heart of Haiti to shine a light on the “trade, not aid” program, which provides sustainable income to Haitian artisans struggling to rebuild their lives and support their families after the 2010 earthquake.
I love my mom. I know everyone says that but I really do. I of course appreciate her way more than I did when I was younger. I hated being a kid and being told what to do. But she always seemed to know what I was up to and knew what to do. You see, my mom was a young mom. She has my older sister at the age of 17… right before her senior prom. I came around shortly before my mom’s 20th birthday. I should always know her how old she is.. I never forget. So she knew what we were up to and had her own way of taking care of it because she had just came from that time in her life.
I remember when I was about 8 or 9. She took my older sister and myself into her bedroom and closed the door. I had no idea what was going on. I now think my sister did but that’s beside the point. She took out this package and proceeded to tell us what would happen to us in a couple of years. There was a cheesy video involved with pads and tampons for us to play with. I’m sure she had ordered it from somewhere. At the time, I didn’t know how hard it was for her to do that. To take your oldest girls and explain that they will soon become women. I realize now as a mom how hard it would be to sit with your children and talk to them about something like that… especially being a young mom and thinking about your children going through what you did. My mom is the strongest woman I know and I am the person I am because of her. I love her so much! Happy Mother’s Day!
Thank you to Macy’s Heart of Haiti for sponsoring my participation in this “Share Your Heart” promotion. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective. All opinions expressed here are my own.
