What to Look for When Buying Your Teen Their First Car

January 9, 2020 by Ashley T

A car counts as one of the most important steps in becoming an adult. However, most people are not technically adults when they get their first car. They are teens. Maybe your own teen is ready for this important milestone. If that’s the case, you’ll want to keep a few things in mind when you go car shopping with your teen.

Cost

Cost is always a factor when it comes to buying a car. However, your teen’s first car falls into a special category. First, more expensive cars are often also more expensive to maintain. Second, whether we like to admit it or not, there is an issue about possible fender benders. You’re likely to worry less about your teen getting into a minor scrape if the car doesn’t cost that much to begin with. Car insurance for teens will always be expensive but also depends on the type of car you get and the policy you choose. Keeping the initial price of the car down will offset some of the other related expenses like insurance.

Ease of Handling

Compact cars, while not very powerful, tend to be very easy to handle and park on city streets. It’s for this reason when given a choice between two cars that both have a low cost, many parents will select the one that is more compact. Such a car will match two of your criteria. A compact car will suit your budget, and any vehicle that handles well is usually safer too.

Maintenance

All vehicles need maintenance, it’s just a fact of life. This is especially true of used cars, and it’s likely that’s what you’ll be getting for your teen the first time out. When it comes to vehicle maintenance, there are a couple of factors you need to be aware of. If the car is really old, you’re going to be spending a lot of money on it due to wear and tear, and if it is an unusual model, the maintenance costs will be higher.

You want to purchase a car that’s old enough to be inexpensive but not so old it will break down constantly. You also want to find one common enough to make finding parts convenient and affordable. Falls Motor City Dodge has a great selection to look for something perfect for your teen.

Buying your teen a car is an important and difficult decision. Certainly, you’ll be looking at the price of the vehicle. This may be the deciding factor for or against a particular car. However, you’re also going to be considering whether it is easy to handle and safe to drive. Finally, the car that you ultimately buy should be easy to maintain. Otherwise, it will be less safe and more costly in the long run.
