5 Steps for Building a Home Workshop

January 27, 2021 by Ashley T

If you’ve always longed to have your own workshop for your DIY projects, your dream is closer than you think. Anyone can build a workshop at home if you set your mind to it. All you need is a dedicated space and some free time to construct your vision. Once you have created your DIY space, you will have your own private paradise to enjoy. A place to store all your tools and unfinished projects, and enjoy some quiet time away from the stresses of daily life.

If this sounds ideal and you’d like to get started on your journey, here are five steps for building a home workshop.

Make space

The most suitable place for a home workshop would be a garage. This is a spacious room with plenty of opportunities to transform it. If you have access to the entire garage then you can go all out, but if it’s used to store cars and other belongings, you can still make do with a corner of the room. If you don’t have a garage, you could use an attic, basement, or spare room of your house. If you have the budget for it, you could even build a shed in your backyard. Once you’ve chosen a space, you will need to declutter and clean it to create a suitable condition for your needs.

Add power

There’s a good chance you’ll be working with power tools, so you’ll need your workspace to be equipped with electricity. Work out what your specific needs will be, and if you need more juice, it would be a good idea to hire a professional electrician to set you up with what you need.

Make it secure

Power tools are expensive, and the last thing you want is an opportunistic criminal breaking into your brand new workshop and making off with all your stuff. A crucial step in creating your workshop is to ensure that it is secure and protected at all times. Sturdy doors and windows with solid locks are essential, and motion lights and burglar alarms will help to deter potential thieves.

Obtain equipment

Once your workshop is set up, the next step is to fill it with all the equipment you’ll need. A good-quality workbench is essential and it should be big and sturdy enough for your intended projects. You will also require a whole host of additional kits. Depending on your specific needs this could include power tools, raw materials, lathes, drilling machines, an air compressor, a compressor dryer, welders, sanders, and jigsaws.

Invest in storage

With all your new tools, you’ll need somewhere to store them. It’s not a good idea to leave everything out on display as it will be more likely to get lost or stolen. Invest in some secure locked cabinets to tuck expensive gear away, and add some shelves and other smart storage solutions to keep the workshop free of clutter.

In conclusion, building a workshop can take up a lot of time, but if you know what you want and follow a plan, the job will be enjoyable and efficient.
