I’ve been trying to be more cost effective and deciding to make my own laundry detergent came from the fact that it seems no stores around Columbus seem to sell the detergent I like to use. You see, I am a Charlies Soap girl. Loved it from the first time I used it. However, everytime I took the time to find it, it took me longer to find the powder version. I found a way to order it online but I learned that they were discontinuing the free shipping, especially since I found a way to have it automatically shipped.

So a friend of mine gave me a recipe for detergent in liquid form that she stood behind. I am not much of a liquid detergent person. I mean I will if I have to but I thought, their has to be a way for me to make it in powder form. And I found it. I would say that 2 batches of this would make approx 100 loads. Give or take some based on how many tablespoons you use.And it is much cheaper than buying detergent. I’ll show you below.

One box of Washing Soda makes 6 batches.
One box of 20 Mule Team Borax makes 8 batches.
One bar of Fels-Naptha makes 1 batch.
6 batches=
1 box Washing soda: $3.24
6 bars of Fels-Naptha: $5.82
3/4 of a box of 20 Mule Team Borax: $3.50
Total: $12.56 for 6 batches of laundry detergent (approx 300 loads)
Are you interested in making it yourself? I suggest making 1 batch and trying it out. If you don’t like it, you’ve only spent $8.87 and have some ingredients left over to enhance your regular detegent. Or to make some Flubber for the kids.
